VISITING MEXICAN ARTISTS
The Visiting Mexican Artists Program presents master Oaxacan (Wa-ha-can) woodcarver Ventura Fabian and his son, Norberto, in a series of presentations about their craft in several Brookline schools this November. Each school presentation consists of a basic workshop that proceeds throughout the day to create a detailed work of art from raw wood. Throughout the session the artists demonstrate all phases of their craft as they work on their carvings. The work of Ventura and Norberto, because of its simplicity, humor and strong general appeal, is well-suited to fostering inter-cultural understanding and appreciation.
The students are shown where the artists live in Oaxaca in Mexico and watch a short video about them and their village. They also learn about the history and craft of Oaxacan woodcarving and the daily life of the artists, and their families, in their community. A carving is presented to the school as a parting gift.
